Bioidentical Hormone Doctors Help Women and Men Get in Balance
BOISE, ID. - June, 2010 - As May comes to a close, many of us are relieved to trade in our parkas and snow boots, for bikinis and flip flops; however, for baby-boomers struggling with stubborn weight gain, crowded beaches and poolside barbeques aren't exactly at the top of the to-do list. In support of National Physical Fitness Month, BodyLogicMD's bioidentical hormone doctors share a few tips on what women and men in their 40's and 50's can do to retain the physique of their youthful prime.
"As women and men age, hormones begin to decline, oftentimes making it difficult to maintain a healthy weight," shares Boise bioidentical hormones expert Dr. Dennis Page. "In addition to menopause and andropause (the male menopause), chronic stress can lead to the overproduction of the stress hormone known as cortisol, which has been linked to health challenges commonly associated with weight gain, such as obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome."
Here are some ways for women and men to say fit in their 40's, 50's, 60's and beyond:
? Hormonal balance - Hormones are perhaps the most important piece of the puzzle. It doesn't matter how well you eat or how often you exercise; when hormones aren't properly balanced, it can really take a toll on your overall health.
? Cardio - Now that summer is here, it's a great time to take advantage of the outdoors. Light jogging, brisk walks and swimming can all help get the blood flowing and in addition to lowering the risk of age-related diseases, cardio activity can give the metabolism a much get weight boost and make it easier to maintain a target weight range.
? Light resistance - Light resistance training, using dumbbells or elastic exercise bands can help to strengthen bones and prevent diseases such as osteoporosis and arthritis. When it comes to our muscles and bones, you either use ?em or lose ?em.
? Stress reduction - Although it's important to break a sweat every now and again, it's important that we take time to slow things down with deep breathing exercises and meditation. When we find healthy ways to blow off steam, we're reducing our risk of health challenges brought on by excess cortisol production.
Hormones are like little messengers that help our bodies perform a multitude of biological processes. Many of the symptoms that women experience during menopause - hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, weight gain, and low libido - are all the result of an underlying hormonal imbalance. It's the body's way of telling us, something just isn't right. Sedentary lifestyles coupled with hormonal imbalances and chronic stress can spell disaster for our overall health. Even when following a proper diet, stress can wreak havoc on the body's delicate interplay of hormones and oftentimes lead to a wide range of symptoms, the most common being weight gain and adrenal fatigue.
"We need to stay active," stresses Dr. Page. "Physical activity works wonders for our hormonal health, but it also helps to protect our muscles from atrophy and our bones from osteoporosis and arthritis. Exercise isn't just about looking good in a bikini either - it's about feeling good on the inside and out."
