Well ladies if all that information is leaving you a little bit overwhelmed, pay attention here because Dr. Michael Lee of BodyLogicMD is here to tell us how to be healthy in each decade of your life. Dr. Michael Lee, I am so happy to have you here, how are you doing?
Dr. Michael Lee - Thank you, great.
Kristin Anderson - Well I was complaining to my dad yesterday that I am getting gray hairs and he told me, Kristin just suck it up, so I found out that you are coming and I am very very excited to talk about health at any age , because I mean as women we really really worry about this. So let's begin. What does it take to ensure optimal health, in general?
Dr. Michael Lee - Well to ensure optimal health it involves prevention and obviously eating right, exercise and certain preventive test, screening test to pick up disease and illness early so that you can manage it for the later part of your life.
Kristin Anderson - Okay so timing so very very important here. Let's talk about what test women should take in their twenties and thirties.
Dr. Michael Lee - Okay, twenties and thirties is a very healthy time for women and the main test that you are going to want to do are weigh yourself regularly.
Kristin Anderson - Do we have to?
Dr. Michael Lee - Check your blood pressure. Yes you do. Most people don't want to step on the scale and worry about the weigh but during the healthy part of your life that is a really key time to do it, check your blood pressure and know your cholesterol numbers. And of course get your annual breast exams, pap smears, and pelvic exams.
Kristin Anderson - Okay so once you, let's start with the scale thing because I know a lot of women, I never weigh myself and so what should you be looking for to necessarily see if you gained a few pounds because I know a lot of us obsess about that kind of thing.
Dr. Michael Lee - Sure, I really wouldn't worry about the weight per say. I would worry about your body and the lean body mass. Everyone has a different bone structure, so at a certain height you don't want to worry about the number you want to worry about how your body looks, lean body mass.
Kristin Anderson - How important is working out when you're in your twenties and thirties?
Dr. Michael Lee - Extremely important that's the time to start your body on a metabolic rate where you maintain exercise and that enables you to maintain your lean body mass.
Kristin Anderson - Okay, what test should women make sure to get in their forties?
Dr. Michael Lee - In their forties, that's the time when you want to ensure that you get your hormone levels checked, check your blood pressure, check your blood sugar. A lot of people develop diabetes and you want to know about that early on. As far as the hormones are concerned, that's a time in the forties when women start to go a little bit downhill and as far as testing for the hormones there are good test like blood test, urine test, and the best test that I have found for women is saliva testing.
Kristin Anderson - Okay and I know you have one right here.
Dr. Michael Lee - Yes, I have a sample saliva kit. Kristin Anderson - Easy to do?
Dr. Michael Lee - Yes, in my clinic we do four tests during the day and it measures your estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, all the other hormones and especially cortisol.
Kristin Anderson - Okay, okay, lastly, what about women fifty plus? Let's talk about the fifty plus.
Dr. Michael Lee - Fifty plus, it's time to start stepping back on the scale, women start gaining weight and being overweight can put you at risk for getting other diseases like heart attacks and strokes. You want to get rectal exams, annual rectal exams. Go to the doctors they need to check your rectum and a colonoscopy every 10 years.
Kristin Anderson - 10 years okay.
Dr. Michael Lee - Yes
Kristin Anderson - Okay and I know a lot of people fifty plus, I mean Oprah and Meryl Streep say fifties are the best times of your life.
Dr. Michael Lee - Yes that should be the best time of your life.
Kristin Anderson - Okay, as long as we stay healthy. Thank you Dr. Lee so much.
Dr. Michael Lee - Thank you
Kristin Anderson - Okay, we appreciate having you here.
