BodyLogicMD's Dr. Eric Honing was recently featured on Sonoran Living, discussing how women can become CEO of their own body, by taking preventive measures throughout each decade of their life. It's important that women are aware of what tests and screenings are necessary and at what age. When women are proactive about their health, they can avoid health complications later on in life.
Dr. Honing believes that balance is the key to longevity. It is very critical that women eat healthy, exercise regularly, take necessary supplements, and also take part in what Dr. Honing calls "Zen balance." Zen balance means that everyone should take the steps to manage their stress and enjoy their life on a daily basis.

Host: So here's a question. When should you have your first mammogram? It's a question a lot women wonder and when should you start being concerned about osteoporosis? Well it's never too early to know the answers to health questions like these so that you know how to act, and know when to act and how to stay healthy and we wanted to invite Dr. Eric Honing here with some advice he's here with some preventative test that women should be taking, really every decade and it's a great reminder for all of just to kind of refresh these little tips and tricks. Good morning by the way.
Dr. Eric Honing: Good morning, thanks for having me on the show.
Host: So lets talk first thing first. 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's they all call for different types of test and different sorts of health awareness?
Dr. Eric Honing: Well the big thing I try to emphasize with my patients is number 1 is you have to be in charge of your body, you need to become the CEO of your body so you need to come educated and aware of what test you should get at what decade and so then it becomes very important that when you get in your 20's we want to find out some baselines numbers.
Host: Let's start with the 20's we have some information and just some information just so that the people can say, here are some main things that you need to be looking at and run through these for me and what they mean.
Dr. Eric Honing: Well when in our 20's we like to get something called a high sensitivity C reactive protein that measures inflammation in our body, our cells do not like inflammation and ultimately allows them not to function properly so get that test measured. Everybody knows to get a good pelvic exam, pap smears, but there are a couple other tests that I really want people to understand and talk about. Vitamin D is so crucial in our health and about 80% of us are suboptimal in vitamin D and vitamin D can help prevent heart disease, can prevent cancers, especially breast cancers even been shown to be getting the optimal levels of vitamin D you know 50% to 60% of breast cancers can be reduced.
Host: So how do you know what your vitamin D levels are? Because you would assume since we live in the dessert were totally okay.
Dr. Eric Honing: and that's what you know, in my practice and that's people who are supplementing with vitamin D, everybody is so much more deficient so go see your physician get a vitamin D level and there is a big level, range of like twenty to a hundred.
Host: It's a blood test?
Dr. Eric Honing: It's a blood test, get a blood test and make sure you understand the numbers. That's the big key to understand when you working with your physician, that you've got to understand the numbers just as well as the physician could because they may say ah you're in the normal range, but really it's the range that's in the optimal level that we always want to emphasize.
Host: Lets go to then 30's if we could with our informational screen and so the people can really kind of get those baseline indicators of what they should be 30's and 40's that is, 40's, I've lost track the last one was 20's and 30's.
Dr. Eric Honing: Once we get into the 40's I mean we're going to continue on the test done in their 20's and 30's but
Host: But it's not like we discontinue those
Dr. Eric Honing: No we don't discontinue those but this is really where hormones really start to play a role this is when hormones are changing and hormones are so important not only to help relieve symptoms, you know it helps preserve our bone health our heart health, our joint health and really our memory health and so really our vitality of our life is very important.
Host: I have to ask what a baseline thermogram is.
Dr. Eric Honing: a thermogram is another way of evaluating breast tissue. Mammograms there are a lot of controversy for it but a thermogram is a way of examining the breast without compression without radiation and it basically measures heat, and so the theory behind it is that when there's a cancer cell there it requires more blood supply and so that increase blood supply admits more heat so can be picked up actually very early.
Host: Is there more accuracy is this sort of test that a mammogram or is it just enhance?
Dr. Eric Honing: It enhances, everything is about enhancing, so we don't want to say this test is better than this other test but the good news about it the contras about mammograms is there is there radiation, it's an uncomfortable test. You know this is 20% of your breast cancers.
Host: Well and to, there has recently been within the last year this, this debate
Dr. Eric Honing: this task force Host: This task force that says yeah you don't need it when
Dr. Eric Honing: yeah we'll wait till their 50's. So thermograms is another way of doing that where you can be very prospective of in terms of being very preventative and pick up the cancer, maybe a lot earlier that maybe a mammogram does so look and ask your physician about getting some of these test done.
Host: As we kind of start to evaluate our health what would you say is the number one this that you go if I could just tell women to do this they would really be doing themselves a great service.
Dr. Eric Honing: Well, I like to tell my physicians, life is really about body balance and so the corner stone of balance our body is really hormone balance, but just as important is lifestyle balance. Make sure you are eating healthy, eating small frequent meals, eating raw foods, getting a good amount of exercise, taking the proper amount of supplements, and what I call the last thing is called "zin" balance. How do we balance stress, what do we do to de-stress ourselves, are we really out there enjoying our lives, you know cause? life it to short, we've only got one shot at it we got to go out there and enjoy it.
Host: I think there's something like this that we can't possibly dealt it's specificity into every single age group but what it does is it remind us no matter where you are to make your health on top of the list and start asking the questions.
Dr Eric Honing: Make sure you're in charge, go see your physician, ask for specific test.
