Back in December of 2009, Dr. Landa was featured on the Buzz, discussing the dangers of holiday toxins - this time, Dr. Landa talks about the difference between organic and processed foods and explains how certain foods may be negatively impacting our health.
Dr. Landa discusses the benefits of going organic - from the foods we eat to the chemicals we use to keep our homes squeaky clean. In addition, Dr. Landa weighs out the options of buying organic products and explains how we can save ourselves a lot of trouble by going green and eliminating environmental toxins from our daily lives, and serves up some tips on how you can do it, without breaking the bank.
Transcript:
Host: we are living green this week and serving up the pros and cons of going organic. Dr. Jennifer Landa from BodyLogicMD is breaking down organic eating and cleaning and some good things for your skin. Hey Doc, welcome?.
Dr. Landa- thanks for having me.
Host: ok. Explain to me in terms I can understand at 6:00 in the morning. I'm thinking this is some dry fiber thing, you know what I mean? It sounds dry.
Dr. Landa- Organic can sound dry, but what organic farming really is, is it's food including meat, dairy, vegetables and fruits that are made without chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides that are toxic for our bodies.
Host: ok
Dr. Landa- So organic farms, instead of using those things, use compost and manures'more natural things. They also use 100% organic feed. This is pretty important because if animals eat toxins and we eat the animal, we've got the toxins inside of us.
Host: oh, no wait a minute, I just don't believe that. Is this thing just a fad, are you serious?
Dr. Landa- People ask me "Is organic all about hype?" I tell them this is a very important study. I love this study because I'm a mom and this study is about kids. What they did was fed kids their regular conventional diet for a week, they measured toxin levels in their urine and they saw thigh levels of toxins. Then they put them on an organic diet for a week and they saw the toxins merely disappear for a week, then they added back in the conventional foods and the toxins came right back.
Host: I don't mind going organic, but it is so expensive. How do you get around that?...especially foods that you have to have.
Dr. Landa-when my patients ask me that, I tell them you cannot afford not to go organic. The health care costs that you're going to get later down the road from the sickness you're going to get from the toxins are going to be higher. You have to avoid those things now, you have to invest in your future now.
Host: what about organic for cleaners or organic skins care? I've seen all of these products out there.
Dr. Landa- Yes, let's talk about three things that you can change, you can go organic and save. Number 1, food, #2 go healthy food stores and the pricy places, but go to the super markets, look for the fleers sometimes there are sales that are as well priced.
Host: what about skin care?
Dr. Landa- There are simple things you can do like coconut oil, olive oil, which are healthy replacements for moisturizers that can be cheaper.
Host: Ok go organic on the cheap?thanks doc for more information on organic go to our website dailybuzznow.com
