Cyndi Rooks was feeling tired, depressed, lethargic, and had gained 90 pounds. After receiving normal test results from multiple doctors, she started to think that she was crazy. That was until she met with Dr. Gary Bernard of BodyLogicMD, who diagnosed her with hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid. She began to take thyroid replacement pills, and as a result has lost 40 pounds and feels better than ever. Today there is a debate in the medical world about the diagnosis of thyroid problems. While Dr. Bernard believes that it is underdiagnosed because many doctors are too dependent on lab tests, Dr. Robert C. Smallridge of the Mayo Clinic feels that treating symptoms that are not backed by blood tests can be risky and may lead to the development of heart problems or osteoporosis.
