BodyLogicMD’s Chief Medical Officer says estrogen plus natural progesterone is best
Chicago, IL – March 2006 - Hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain and mood swings have become a way of life for some women, but good news may bring some relief.
After a 2002 Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study showed hormone replacement therapy (HRT) using estrogen and progestin (a synthetic form of progesterone) could possibly increase the risk of breast cancer, strokes and heart attacks, many women with menopausal symptoms opted to forgo its use. But a recent reevaluation of the study data shows that estrogen-only therapy may be a safer treatment.
According to an ABC News report on the topic, in the new analysis of WHI’s study, estrogen alone did not increase the risk of heart attacks in women ages 50 to 79. The 2002 study showed a 30 percent increase in women taking estrogen plus progestin.
BodyLogicMD’s Chief Medical Officer, who works with patients to restore hormonal imbalances using bioidentical (natural) hormones, said that he agrees with the study, but believes the addition of natural progesterone to estrogen might be the best therapy yet.
“The underlying message this latest analysis proves is that in many cases the overall benefits of bioidentical hormone therapy outweigh the risks. “If you analyze the WHI, in the women in the placebo group versus the Premarin (estrogen) only group, you initially see an increase in heart attacks in the women who had not been on hormone therapy for a number of years,”
BodyLogicMD’s Chief Medical Officer explains. “We then see a decrease in heart disease in the women in years six and seven.” BodyLogicMD’s Chief Medical Officer explains it is when we add the synthetic progesterone-like chemical called Provera that we see the following significant findings:
- 22 percent increase in heart disease,
- 41 percent increase in stroke, and
- 26 percent increase in breast cancer.
“This is why the estrogen-alone arm is felt to be safe in the use to prevent heart attacks; the sooner the hormone is given, the better,” BodyLogicMD’s Chief Medical Officer.
Hundreds of men and women visit BodyLogicMD’s Chief Medical Officer and other BodyLogicMD physicians every year searching for answers to questions about changes in their bodies and attitudes oftentimes attributed to hormonal imbalances such as premenstrual syndrome, menopause and andropause (the male menopause). After evaluating each patient’s hormone levels using saliva and blood testing, the doctors use bioidentical hormone therapy coupled with proper nutrition and fitness to correct disparities.
BodyLogicMD’s Chief Medical Officer says this integrated approach, along with the use of hormones that replicate the body’s own, encourages the body to respond optimally, without any adverse side effects.
