Libido Reboot: Simple Steps to Restore Your Sex Drive

BodyLogicMD Chief Medical Officer Reveals How to Reboot Your Libido

February, 2011 - February is here and for many of us, the part we look forward to most is Valentine's Day. However, if you're one of the millions of Americans suffering from low libido, cupid can leave a lot to be desired. It's common for women and men to become less interested in sex as they get older, but fortunately, there's something you can do about it. BodyLogicMD Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Jennifer Landa explains how a Libido Reboot can help to rekindle some of the passion that you've lost over the years.

According to Dr. Landa, the major factors that can lead to a reduction in libido are your hormones, relationship issues, fatigue and stress. "As most people are aware, testosterone is the hormone of libido," Landa says. "But other hormones are equally important. It's the overall balance of your hormones that counts most."

In addition to testosterone, Dr. Landa recommends that you consider your cortisol and estrogen levels, whether you're a man or a woman. And for women, progesterone levels are also crucial.

So just what can you do to improve your libido? Here are Dr. Landa's recommendations:

Balance Your Hormones - Hormone imbalances are a major cause of poor libido, and balancing you hormones can make a huge difference. "But it's hard to know whether your hormones are imbalanced or not without getting tested," Landa shares, "so it's really important to get tested if you suspect that you might have some hormone abnormalities."

Eat right - Proper nutrition can improve your energy levels. And, sometimes, the right foods might even put you in the mood! According to Dr. Landa, chocolate is one example of that. "It's a very feel-good food," she says, "and it actually can change certain brain chemicals to possibly increase arousal."

Exercise - If you don't have the energy to put into your sex life, exercise can cause a world of difference. It'll give you more energy, lower your stress levels, and improve your overall feeling of wellness.

De-stress -Relaxation techniques are very important. "Too much stress is a definite libido killer," reveals Landa. She recommends relaxation videos or tapes, meditation, yoga, massage, and other relaxation techniques. "It all just depends on what appeals to you," she says.

Spice things up - According to Landa, "Novelty is very important for couples". She says that you can either go back to things that you used to be interested in, or find new things that may be exciting.

Avoid alcohol - "A lot of people find that alcohol is a depressant, and makes you tired," warns Landa. "It can actually be a sex sinker, so to speak: it can actually decrease sex drive."
