BodyLogicMD Commends Oprah for Starting the Conversation About Bioidentical Hormone Therapy

Oprah Plans A Series Of Shows Focused On Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Manchester, Connecticut - January, 2009 - “I was very pleased by the balanced show Oprah did on bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT),” says Alicia Stanton, M.D., BodyLogicMD Chief Medical Officer and hormone therapy expert, in response to Oprah Winfrey’s January 15 show titled Bioidentical Hormone Therapy: Part 1 and her statement: “We're opening a national conversation about hormone replacement therapy. This is about your hormones being out of whack, and you don't even know – we haven't had a language to talk about it yet."

Now, not only has Oprah’s focus given “hormone imbalance” a place in the conversation, but also is helping to redefine the meaning of “aging” in our culture.

Doctors who practice functional and anti-aging medicine, like Oprah’s guest Dr. Christiane Northrup (author of The Wisdom of Menopause), Dr. Prudence Hall and the network of doctors at BodyLogicMD, work closely with men and women who suffer from the symptoms most closely associated with menopause, andropause (the male menopause) and hormone imbalance: difficulty sleeping, weight gain, fatigue, hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, thyroid disorders, and adrenal fatigue. Physician’s who specialize in hormone imbalance often look at different types of labs including serum (blood), urine and saliva. They also study the numbers in a different way and may be able to spot imbalances that traditional doctors don’t readily see.

“Oprah spoke for so many of the women who come to me when she described the symptoms of peri-menopause and menopause as ‘having the life force sucked out of you’ and feeling ‘flat’,” says Dr. Stanton. “What was so important was the discussion about how to correct and balance the hormones responsible for the symptoms. A comprehensive approach, including bioidentical hormones, diet, nutritional supplements and an exercise plan, are what make the difference for my patients.”

This combination has helped Oprah’s guest Robin McGraw, author of What's Age Got to Do with It?, who joined Oprah to share her experiences with hormone replacement therapy. Hot flashes, night sweats, “feeling melancholy” and “losing excitement for everything I was doing in my life” sent Robin to a doctor who prescribed synthetic hormones and anti-depressants – a prescription that Robin refused. After researching her options, Robin finally found Dr. Hall, who has not only helped her manage her menopause, but also to “feel better than I ever have in my life.” Continued monitoring of her hormone levels and symptoms help ensure that Robin stays balanced.

Adds Dr. Stanton, “It is essential to find a doctor who is highly trained specifically in bioidentical hormone therapy. As Dr. Northrup told Oprah’s audience, taking any hormones comes with risk and no woman or man should undergo hormone replacement therapy without the supervision and care of an experienced doctor.”

BodyLogicMD physicians are among the highest of trained specialists in the field of bioidentical hormone therapy, functional, regenerative and anti-aging medicine. BodyLogicMD looks forward to Oprah’s upcoming show with Suzanne Somers (January 29, 2009) and a future airing with Dr. Oz, who will visit a bioidentical hormone compounding pharmacy.
