Study Shows Low Testosterone Linked to High Mortality Hormone Specialist Dr. Gary Bernard Agrees
Jacksonville, FL – September 2006 - Maintaining balanced levels of testosterone can make you live longer.
That is what a recent study shows, linking low testosterone to higher mortality in older men and BodyLogicMD’s Dr. Gary Bernard agrees.
“This is what I practice and preach to my patients, the importance of balanced levels of testosterone and how to best take advantage of the new science of anti-aging medicine such as bioidentical hormone therapy,” said Dr. Gary Bernard, BodyLogicMD physician and hormone therapist who treats both men and women for hormonal imbalances.
In an eight-year analysis of male veterans, nearly 35 percent of men with low testosterone levels died, versus around 20 percent of men with normal levels of testosterone, a hormone responsible for maintaining muscle bulk, red blood cell counts, bone growth, mental well-being and sexual function.
The study, published last month in the Archives of Internal Medicine, is the largest study to date to make the association between lower testosterone and higher mortality.
Andropause, the male menopause, is the result of a gradual drop in testosterone. Symptoms manifest themselves in a number of ways including physical, emotional, psychological and behavioral changes.
“Andropause is a real condition for men, and they need to learn that it is possible to lose weight, regain youthful physiques, and restore health, energy, and sexuality, all through bioidentical hormone therapies,” said Bernard.
Unlike menopause in women, in which the body halts production of estrogen, men experience a gradual loss of sex hormones starting around 30. By the age of 80, about half of men have low testosterone levels, although the hormone never completely stops. A drop in testosterone can lead to decreased muscle mass, increased body fat and obesity, lower libido, less energy and irritability.
"The risks and benefits of testosterone replacement need to be evaluated by a qualified hormone therapy expert, each person’s anatomy and physiology are different so it is not a one size fits all diagnosis," Bernard said. Balanced testosterone levels can:
- Improve brain function
- Increase energy
- Increase strength
- Increase bone density
- Increase libido
- Improve sexual sensitivity
- Improve sexual function
- Improve HDL and LDL levels
- Improve cardiovascular health
Testosterone replacement therapy is a treatment for men with low testosterone who want to boost their health and overall well-being in their later years. Perhaps the best news for men and women is that hormone losses and imbalances are easily correctible. And through proper treatment, BodyLogicMD can bring about a healthier, younger and more vital you.
