At age 42, I sought out an Anti-Aging Physician

My story began with the basic understanding that as men age, hormonal changes occur that perceptibly inhibit physical, sexual, and cognitive function. The outward appearance of a typical middle-age male shows increased abdominal fat and decreased muscle mass, a hallmark effect of hormone imbalance. A loss of feeling of wellbeing, sometimes manifesting as depression, is a common psychological complication of this hormone imbalance.  Until recently, these changes were attributed to  "growing old," and men were expected to accept the fact that their body was entering into a long degenerative process that would someday result in death. And, to our detriment, conventional doctors are increasingly prescribing drugs to treat depression, elevated cholesterol, angina and a host of other diseases that may be caused by an underlying hormone imbalance instead of checking our blood levels of estrogen, testosterone, thyroid, and DHEA and understanding that many problems could be eliminated by adjusting hormone levels to fit the profile of a healthy man in his 20s. And, importantly, there is NO correlation between low-dose testosterone therapy and prostate cancer. One only has to look into the medical literature to find that answer, although your primary care physician may choose to believe the myth!

Thus, at age 42, I sought out an anti-aging physician, not just a company or person who uses "standard protocols", to review my hormone levels and make the necessary adjustments to reverse or at least slow down the early signs of the degenerative changes known as andropause that I started to experience. After some initial correspondence with Dr. Hank Wagner of BodyLogicMD Hampstead, New Hampshire, I knew that he fully understood andropause and hormone therapy for men. Importantly, Dr. Wagner uses BOTH lab values through saliva and blood testing as well as clinical responses to the treatment versus just trying to modulate hormone balance by the lab numbers. After 1-year of treatment using bioidentical hormone therapy, we are still adjusting my hormone levels using a conservative approach. And, I am happy to report that many of the symptoms of andropause I was experiencing prior to starting treatment have either decreased or gone away. I certainly have more stamina, am able to gain muscle mass more easily, and able to keep abdominal fat in check. This wasn't the case before starting bioidentical homornes despite working out consistently and maintaining a healthy diet. Overall, I am extremely happy with the results and anticipate that additional gains will be made as my hormone profile is adjusted according to both my lab values and my clinical response.
