Weight Loss May Help Menopausal Hot Flashes

Hot flashes, also known as hot flushes, are a common symptom of menopause. Hot flashes typically consist of a warm sensation in the face, usually accompanied by sweating and redness, and can last for five or more years. Numerous studies suggest that a higher body mass index (BMI) -- a measurement of height and weight -- is associated with more frequent and disruptive hot flashes, but whether losing weight could make a difference has remained unclear.
According to researchers, women who maintain a healthy target weight may find hot flashes easier to manage and less bothersome. The study, which was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, assessed 338 overweight women, with a median age of 50-years-old. Each woman was randomly assigned to either a behavior-oriented weight loss regimen or a health education program. The researched concluded that for every 11 pounds of weight loss, hot flashes were improved by 33 percent.
If you're overweight and suffering from hot flashes, losing a few pounds may help. However, regardless of your weight, if you're experiencing hot flashes or other symptoms of menopause, such as night sweats, fatigue, mood swings and depression, it would be wise to consult with your physician to discuss some options that can help you restore balance and find some relief.
