Vitamin D Crucial to Heart Health and More | July 2009

Vitamin D deficiency is a problem that can be brought about due to factors such as aging, winter season, less sunlight exposure, and individuals with cystic fibrosis or inflammatory bowel disease. This deficiency affects many health conditions, including high blood pressure and ischemic heart disease. People who have heart disease along with low levels of vitamin D are at an increased risk for high blood pressure or sudden death. The reason why patients with heart failure are prone to have an imbalance of nutrients is that the imbalance leads to an activation of certain hormones. This can lead to inflammation and wasting of soft tissues and bone. One thing that could solve this deficiency is a polynutrient supplement that includes calcium, magnesium, zinc selenium, and vitamins D, B12, and B1 that would possibly play a role in heart failure management. While there is evidence for all of this, the role of nutrition in cardiovascular diseases is still a highly unexplored field.
