Toxins in baby food might affect hormones

April 2011 - Does your baby's food contain potentially harmful hormones? According to a recent Italian study, it might. Researchers at the University of Pisa tested 185 samples of infant formula and 44 samples of meat-based baby food and found that as much as 28% contained fungal hormones, or mycoestrogens. These hormones have been linked to infertility in many mammals, including pigs, although their effect in humans is not completely clear. Some studies have revealed that these mycoestrogens are broken down in the human body and pose no danger, but the Italian researchers stress that these studies were conducted in adults, not infants. They warn of the risk that these contaminated baby food products may affect the fertility of the infants later in life.
More research is needed to fully understand the impact of this contamination. However, BodyLogicMD affiliated physicians are well-aware of the effects that environmental hormones can have on our overall health. They can help patients identify many potentially harmful toxins and contaminants in their families? food sources and living environment.
