The Relationship between Testosterone and Sexual Function in Depressed and Healthy Men

The Relationship between Testosterone and Sexual Function in Depressed and Healthy Men | February, 2010
Recent studies have revealed a correlation between Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and hypogonadism or low testosterone in men. The objective was to determine the effect that low testosterone and MDD have on overall sexual function. Male sexual function was gauged using the Sex Effects (SexFX) Scale and the depression was rated according to the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression-17 item. The study compared levels of bioavailable testosterone (BT) and total testosterone (TT). The study concluded that men suffering from MDD were more likely to experience symptoms of hypogonadism, regardless of age.
There's a great debate as to whether testosterone causes the onset of depression or if depression causes a decline in testosterone. For men over the age of 40, low testosterone is oftentimes the result of andropause (the male menopause). Fortunately, BodyLogicMD's bioidentical hormone doctors can detect these underlying hormonal imbalances and help to relieve men of symptoms by balancing testosterone with bioidentical hormones./p>
