The Negative Effects of Stress for Diabetics| March, 2010

According to an article recently published on WorldHealth.net, diabetes raises the risk of stress-induced cognitive decline. Stress prompts the release of cortisol, a corticosteroid hormone that is produced the adrenal glands that sit atop the kidneys. Cortisol is the body's "fight or flight" response to stress and helps the give the metabolism a much needed boost in times of peril. However, when produced in large quantities, cortisol can wreak havoc on the body and many of the body's biological processes. Rebecca M. Reynolds and colleagues from the University of Edinburg (Scotland) studies 1,066 women and men, ages 60 to 75, with type II diabetes, who were currently enrolled in the Edinburg Type 2 Diabetes Study. The researchers discovered that high morning cortisol levels had a strong correlation with progressive cognitive decline in elderly diabetics. The team suggested that diabetics find ways to lower cortisol levels, stating: "Strategies targeted at lowering cortisol action may be useful in [avoiding] cognitive decline in individuals with type 2 diabetes."

When cortisol levels are out of range, it's common for women and men to experience symptoms commonly associated with hormonal imbalances such menopause or andropause (the male menopause). The bioidentical hormone doctors at BodyLogicMD help women and men balance cortisol levels and alleviate symptoms of hormonal imbalance such as weight gain, anxiety, irritability and stress-induced adrenal fatigue, using a combination of customized nutrition, fitness, and stress reduction regimens, integrated with bioidentical hormone therapy (when necessary).
