The Idea of Male Menopause Questioned
The Idea of Male Menopause Questioned | June, 2010
Recently BBC News questioned if male menopause was nothing more than a myth and what they discovered was that many doctors were torn on the issue, as to whether or not men have their own cross to bear when it comes to menopause.
While some doctors blame symptoms such as depression and low sex-drive on hormone levels, others strongly disagree. The problem is defining a normal range. "As individuals we are all entirely unique. That is why I create customized programs for my patients. What may be the normal range for one individual may differ for another" says Houston bioidentical hormones expert Dr. Wade Huey.
In the article, some doctors were advocates of using synthetic testosterone to relieve the symptoms associated with male menopause. While other doctors say that unlike the sharp drop in hormones experienced by females, testosterone does not fall drastically, so treatment is oftentimes not necessary.
The article suggests that only men with repeated low levels of testosterone or those with significant symptoms should consider hormone therapy. The conclusion drawn was that doctors should assess the individual's risks versus benefits associated with hormone therapy and also that doctors should not use it as a quick fix solution.
"It goes without saying that all aspects of an individual's lifestyle must be considered before they are placed on hormone therapy. I have had many male patients that have come to me and benefited tremendously from a low dose of testosterone" says Dr. Huey of BodyLogicMD of The Woodlands, whose physicians are highly, trained to asses each individual's hormone levels and create a personalized plan including bioidentical hormones, fitness and nutrition.
