September 2011 - While hair loss is oftentimes thought of as a problem that only men have to deal with, many women also suffer from conditions that can cause hair loss and thinning of the hair. Hair loss can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, diet, stress, lifestyle and even hair care products. Still one of the most common causes of hair loss in women and men alike is hormonal imbalance, oftentimes related to perimenopause, menopause and andropause (the male menopause).
The main reason that hair loss is more prevalent among men is that women naturally have higher levels of estrogen, which helps to counteract some of the negative effects of androgens that typically cause hair loss in men. As women get older and estrogen levels begin to decline, hair loss becomes more common. The good news is that women and men can not only prevent future hair loss, but also regrow some of hair that they’ve lost over the years by balancing hormones naturally.
