Study: Most Plastic Products Trigger Estrogen Effect

March, 2011 - A few years ago, the bisphenol A (BPA) content in plastic came under scrutiny when studies revealed that the chemical, which acts like an estrogen in the human body, can contaminate foods and beverages in plastic containers. Many plastic manufacturers responded by reformulating their plastics to remove the problem chemical.

Now, a new study recently published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives reveals that even BPA-free plastics may be leeching estrogen-like chemicals into our foods and drinks. Around 70% of the 455 common plastic products investigated by the study tested positive for these estrogen-like chemicals - and that number increased to 95% when the products were subjected to various conditions such as high heat from a microwave or dishwasher. The authors of the study encourage further adjustments to plastic formulas to remove these estrogen-like chemicals.
