The prevalence of precocious puberty has doubled over the past decade. While there are several theories surrounding the underlying causes of precocious puberty, studies have suggested that the early onset of puberty is likely the result of a combination of environmental and lifestyle factors. In fact scientists say that a child's experiences during infancy and even in the womb may contribute to early development. Regardless of the cause, one thing is for certain - something is definitely wrong hormonally.
As childhood obesity rates continue to grow, some believe that there may be a connection between children who are overweight and precocious puberty. The theory is that excess body fat is affecting hormone levels within the body, namely estrogen. Being that estrogen promotes female characteristics, scientists believe that early development is caused by high estrogen levels. Some also say that environmental toxins found in consumer-based products may also lead to hormonal imbalance in children. Chemicals such as bisphenol A (BPA) can be found in children's toys, food containers and even baby bottles. Predisposing children to dangerous chemicals such as these can do a number on their overall health.
The best way for parents to help their children avoid the dangers of hormonal imbalance and precocious puberty is to promote healthy, proactive lifestyle. Also, be sure to read product labels, feed your family only certified organic meat, fruits, vegetables and dairy to avoid exposure to synthetic hormones and chemical-based fertilizers, structure you child's downtime and make sure that you're limiting their sedentary activities, such as watching television, playing video games and surfing the internet - encourage them to get out and get active. By avoiding environmental toxins and maintaining a healthy target weight, children can safeguard themselves from hormonal imbalances, such as precocious puberty.
