Study finds polycystic ovary patients at greatest risk for pregnancy complications

October 2011 - If you are considering pregnancy and are among the 15 percent of women of reproductive age afflicted by PCOS, you may want to consider the risks to your health and the health of your unborn child.
Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, is an elusive condition, baffling doctors due to a lack of defined symptoms and treatment options. While many women suffering from PCOS present with cystic ovaries, irregular menstrual cycles, weight management issues and abnormal hair growth, no one symptom is synonymous in all cases. Doctors and researchers do know that the condition is significantly related to a hormonal imbalance and recent results suggest that these imbalances may lead to serious pregnancy complications.
On October 13, the British Medical Journal published the results of a large study, discovering that PCOS patients, who became pregnant, regardless of age, weight or with the use of reproductive assistance, were two times more likely to have complications with their pregnancy than someone who does not suffer from the condition. Complications for the mother include gestational diabetes, and preeclampsia. Their babies tended to be born prematurely, large for gestational age and have an increased likelihood of developing asphyxia (lack of oxygen.)
Researchers concluded that these ‘high risk’ patients could benefit from increased surveillance during their pregnancy. Additional studies investigating hormone status, glucose control and other medical treatments may be necessary to determine more optimal treatment plans.
