Mindfulness Program Helps Reduce Bother of Hot Flashes

June 2011 - Hot flashes can be extremely distressing, but what if there were a way for you to handle the hot flashes you have with less of an effect on your life? According to a study recently published in the medical journal Menopause, mindfulness-based stress reduction may be what you're looking for.
The study evaluated 110 women around menopause who averaged five or more moderate to severe hot flashes or night sweats per day. The women were divided into a group which underwent a mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program and a control group. The actual intensity of hot flashes and night sweats was measured, along with quality of life, insomnia, anxiety and perceived stress - factors that evaluate how bothersome the hot flashes and night sweats were to each woman.
While the intensity of hot flashes remained the same for both groups, the women who participated in a MBSR program were significantly less bothered by their hot flashes, maintaining a higher quality of life, better sleep, less anxiety and less stress.
