Man flu really does exist
Man flu really does exist

June 2011 - According to many women, they persevere through colds while the men are bedridden at the first little sniffle. But could there actually be science behind the anecdote? According to Australian researchers from the University of Queensland, there may be. In a study published in the medical journal Respiratory Research, the scientists evaluated the immune response of 63 healthy men and women. The results: women were noticeably more resistant to rhinoviruses (which cause the common cold) than men - but only until menopause. After menopause, women no longer demonstrated this resistance. The fact that the female advantage against the common cold was lost at menopause implies that female hormones may be the key to resistance against colds.
This study demonstrates just one more potential advantage of optimal hormone balance. Perhaps, if hormone levels are maintained at optimal levels, women may be able to retain an increased resistance to colds, in addition to the numerous other health advantages of hormonal balance. The bioidentical hormone doctors in the BodyLogicMD network are hormone experts who can help you to determine if your hormones are imbalanced and help you regain optimal hormone balance through proper nutrition, fitness and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT).
