October 2011 - Low levels of testosterone have often been associated with early mortality, but never with a specific disease state. Earlier this month, the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism discovered that low levels of testosterone are linked to an increased risk for cardiovascular disease, but surprisingly, not any other disease.
Currently, this does not mean that low androgen levels are an optimal indicator for cardiovascular disease risk. The study was a population-based cohort study that examined data on men who had died over the span of a five-year period. Researchers examined the cause of death and associated androgen levels to determine if low testosterone could be a predictor of the cause of death. More studies need to be conducted to gain a more conclusive understanding of this association.
This study is part of a larger research project – the Health in Men Study (HIMS) – studying aging men in Western Australia.
