Integrative Way: Hope for menopausal symptoms

June 2011 - Ever since the Women's Health Initiative studies in 2002, women have feared the side effects associated with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) - and with good reason. Studies showed that synthetic forms of HRT can increase a woman's risk of a wide range of medical complications, including heart disease, breast cancer, blood clots, stroke and heart attack. In light of these troublesome findings, women have begun seeking out alternative options to remedy symptoms of menopause and hormonal imbalance. According to a recent article published by the Seattle Times, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Programs may help women do just that.
According to the article, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Programs consist of meditation, body awareness and "gentle" yoga techniques. Women who participated in the program experienced fewer hot flashes than women who did not participate. A 56 percent decrease to be exact. The article also mentions the use of phytoestrogens, such as isoflavones, like genistein to combat menopausal symptoms. While synthetic HRT may be dangerous, there are many natural alternatives, like phytoestrogens, meditation and even bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), which uses materials derived from yams and soy to replicate the hormones that your body produces naturally.
