Hormone Is Said to Cut Risk of Premature Birth

May 2011 - According to the NY Times, premature birth is the most the common cause of death among newborns. It's estimated that 12.9 million babies are born prematurely each year. Approximately one-third of all premature births in the U.S. are induced by doctors through Caesarean section (C-section). However the remaining two-thirds of these births are spontaneous and in most cases occur in women with a short cervix. When a woman's cervix is shorter than usual, it can soften too early, causing a premature birth.
Scientists are now saying that the pregnancy hormone progesterone may help women with a short cervix reduce their risk of giving birth prematurely. In the study, researchers conducted sonograms on more than 32,000 women who were roughly halfway through their pregnancies. Out of these women, researchers identified 465 women whose cervix was shorter than average. Doctors treated half of this group with vaginal progesterone gel and the remaining half was given a placebo. Based on the study, the women who used progesterone therapy reduced their risk of premature birth by 45 percent.
