Gluten and Menopause: What's the connection?
Gluten and Menopause: What's the connection?

June 2011 - If you're living with untreated celiac disease, you may go through menopause at a younger age, according to a recent study published in the journal Menopause. The study, led by researchers from the University of Naples, Italy, evaluated about 100 postmenopausal women. The women were divided into three groups: one that had been diagnosed with celiac disease and treated with a gluten-free diet for 10 years prior to menopause; one that had not been diagnosed, and thus not treated, for celiac disease until after menopause; and one without celiac disease that served as a control group.
The researchers discovered that the while all of the women had their first period at around the same age, the group with untreated celiac disease underwent menopause several years earlier than either the control group or the group with treated celiac disease. Women whose celiac disease was not treated also reported a greater incidence of menopause symptoms, including hot flashes, irritability and muscle and join problems. Furthermore, before menopause, the women with untreated celiac disease also experienced more pregnancy complications, such as miscarriages and premature births, than the other two groups.
