Flaxseed combined with low-dose estrogen therapy may help preserve bone tissue

July, 2009
A study was done to determine what effect the combination of flaxseed, which is rich in compounds that promote healthy skeletons, and low-dose estrogen therapy had on bone health. Ovariectomimzed rats were tested to determine the combination’s effect on bone mineral density, biomechanical strength, and fatty acid composition throughout the skeletal system. The study came to the conclusion that flaxseed and low-dose estrogen therapy together provide the best protection against ovariectomy-induced bone loss to the lumbar vertebrae. It had no effect on density or strength in the tibia and femur.
