Expert talks about the very real option of hormone therapy

May 2011 - According to a recent article published in the Los Angeles Times, hormone therapy may not be as dangerous as we've been told in the past. After the famed Women's Health Initiative studies were prematurely discontinued, hormone therapy usage declined by 80 percent. The findings revealed that women who used a combination of estrogen and progestin increased their risk of developing breast cancer, heart disease, stroke, blood clots and dementia. However, new research suggests that hormone therapy may be a viable option for women between the ages of 50 and 55 who are experiencing symptoms of menopause.
According to the report, the median age for women undergoing hormone therapy during the WHI trials was 63 and only 4 percent of the women that participated were between the ages of 50 and 55. Researchers say that not only is hormone therapy safe for women who fall within this age range, but many of these women could actually benefit from treatment. The side effects that muddied HRT's reputation appear to only affect older women - women in their 60's and beyond. The article also mentions safer alternatives to synthetic hormones, such as natural hormone replacement or bioidentical hormone therapy.
