Dark Chocolate Takes Bite Out of Stress | January, 2010
It has been recently studied by researchers, at the Nestle Research Center in Lausanne, Switzerland, that eating dark chocolate lowers the amount of the stress hormones cortisol and catecholamine.
Thirty adults with anxiety and high stress levels were chosen for this study. In the beginning, the participants? blood and urine samples were collected determining their anxiety and stress levels. After 2 weeks of eating 1 candy bar or 1.4 ounces of dark chocolate, their new blood and urine samples were analyzed and it was found that dark chocolate reduced stress hormones in those adults who had high anxiety and the participants? metabolism and microbial activity in the gut improved.
Overall, cocoa is rich in antioxidants called flavonoids which have been linked to a numerous number of health benefits such as improved insulin sensitivity, reduced blood pressure and an improved mood.
