Being Heavier May Mean Fewer Hot Flashes for Women Over 60

September 2011 - Does your body weight have any effect on the frequency of your hot flashes? It does if you’re over 60, according to a new study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. The researchers evaluated the body fat percentage, waist circumference and body mass index (BMI) of 52 women while tracking their hot flashes via a special skin monitor and electronic diary.
The study revealed that women — especially white women — with higher fat levels, BMI and waist circumferences had fewer hot flashes than their leaner counterparts. This may be related to the production of estrogens in fat cells, which could cause these women to have higher levels of the hormone.
However, it’s important to remember that increased body fat can have a number of detrimental effects on your health. There are other, healthier ways to increase you estrogen levels and reduce your frequency of hot flashes, including natural bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.
