Dr. Melinda Silva was recently featured on FOX news, offering tips to help women reenergize their libido and get back in the mood. When it comes to low libido, there are many factors that come into play; however, the most common cause of low libido in women is hormonal imbalance. Hormonal imbalances, such as menopause and perimenopause, can lead to a variety of symptoms that oftentimes make it difficult to get in the mood.

The effects of waning estrogen and testosterone levels can negatively impact a woman’s sex life in the following ways:

  • Decreased sensitivity
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Loss of interest in sex
  • Body-image insecurities
  • Difficulty reaching an orgasm

Dr. Silva recommends that women suffering symptoms of low libido consult with a bioidentical hormones specialist to analyze their hormone levels. If a hormonal imbalance is to blame, a customized bioidentical hormones regimen can help restore levels to a normal range and give the libido a much needed boost.

Shally Zomorodi: Well this morning we are talking about how to reboot your libido. So hormone expert, Dr. Melinda Silva of BodyLogicMD is here with us with some solutions to get back in the mood again. Doctor thank you for being with us this morning because even though this might be something a little uncomfortable to talk about it happens more often than we think, especially to women.

Dr. Melinda Silva: Right, there are some studies that show that women will have decreased libido, a sexual disorder called female sexual disorder when their hormones get out of balance usually its testosterone, and balance of the progesterone and estrogen which will decrease their libido. There are lots of factors that you have to consider there are psychological, cultural, physical factors and also medications. Medications can also cause decrease libido, most common medications are oral contraceptives.

Shally Zomorodi: It decreases it

Dr. Melinda Silva: Right, yeah because it will decrease the testosterone, it can decrease the testosterone production so a lot of women may not want to have sex, if they are on oral contraceptives and also anti-depressants can also decrease an orgasm, delay an orgasm.

Shally Zomorodi: Okay

Dr. Melinda Silva: Its very interesting because the FDA is going to meet next week to hopefully talk about and discuss a new medication that’s coming out on the market and that medication is going to be turn into the women’s Viagra. And hopefully those studies are under clinical trials right now and they’re going to be ending in February 2011.

Shally Zomorodi: That be interesting to see that come out and see how it does in the market but is there an age this tends to happen more, I mean does it start in your 20’s does it start in your 30’s, where does it start?

Dr. Melinda Silva: It usually happens after 30 years old. It’s more common in perimenopause and menopause but its alarming some of the statistics show up to 40% of women can have decreased in their libido.

Shally Zomorodi: A lot.

Dr. Melinda Silva: So they should really have a evaluation. A medical evaluation and we do a complete social and physical history and one of the analysis we use is using a hormone analysis and we have a kit here.

Shally Zomorodi: And this is the kit.

Dr. Melinda Silva: Yes, this is a saliva kit and it is very easy to use and

Shally Zomorodi: What are you testing for?

Dr. Melinda Silva: We are testing for hormone levels.

Shally Zomorodi: Okay

Dr. Melinda Silva: and so you have to go to a doctor that specializes in bioidentical hormones or someone who is familiar with how to analyze that kit because we use the result of the kit plus physical and medical history from the patient because we do a complete medical evaluation because sometimes they need hormone therapy, sometimes they don’t, sometimes it’s a relationship issue.

Shally Zomorodi: So there could be a lot of issues. It could be the hormones, it could be that you just not into the person that you are with.

Dr. Melinda Silva: Right, there’s a lot, it’s very complex, more complex for women than for men but luckily there are a lot of things that we can do to help them, there are solutions.

Shally Zomorodi: So let’s talk about some of the things that we can do to help get back into the mood again. If you are struggling right now until you get this stuff, test, what can we do?

Dr. Melinda Silva: For the women right?

Shally Zomorodi: Yes, for women.

Dr. Melinda Silva: You really have to, once they have a medical evaluation and there hormones are balanced the things that you have to do it take care of yourself.

Shally Zomorodi: Okay

Dr. Melinda Silva: You have to get proper nutrition and you have to have enough rest and sleep and if you don’t have those things you not going to want to be intimate. Some of the things

Shally Zomorodi: Which is hard to do especially when you have children running around?

Dr. Melinda Silva: Right, exactly. But sexy lingerie also help right? You never, you know it always helps in the mood, candles set the right mood, getting enough rest.

Shally Zomorodi: They really help?

Dr. Melinda Silva: They do because it helps with intimacy. Also there are some foods that we call sexy foods that increase you libido.

Shally Zomorodi: Sexy foods

Dr. Melinda Silva: Right.

Shally Zomorodi: So I am assuming that there are chemicals or something in here that will trigger something.

Dr. Melinda Silva: Right, exactly. For example, eggs have been a long; have been known since ancient times to increase fertility. So this is used very often for increasing or enhancing libido. Asparagus can increase orgasm for both men and women.

Shally Zomorodi: Asparagus, why?

Dr. Melinda Silva: Yes, Asparagus has something that increases histamine that can promote orgasm in men and women.

Shally Zomorodi: But wait, how much of this asparagus do you need to eat, a lot so you feel it?

Dr. Melinda Silva: Well you can eat a regular side dish, so at least 3 or 4; you don’t have to eat this whole plate.

Shally Zomorodi: Okay so like 3 or 4

Dr. Melinda Silva: So you should eat, and also chocolate.

Shally Zomorodi: We’ve heard this, we’ve heard about the chocolate.

Dr. Melinda Silva: Right, there is something called a theobromine which is a chemical which is similar to caffeine which also helps set the, increase the libido.

Shally Zomorodi: Okay

Dr. Melinda Silva: So then my favorite, what’s on the market right now is there is something called scream cream and this is very interesting. There are compounds in here that the women will put in their private area that will help bring blood flow to that area and will enhance their sexuality and their satisfaction.

Shally Zomorodi: Down Raul.

Dr. Melinda Silva: and that is called scream cream.

Shally Zomorodi: Smells good.

Dr. Melinda Silva: and if you are interested in it you can come and see me at BodyLogicMD Dr.Silva.

Shally Zomorodi: I know, I know, I know that this is an uncomfortable or sometimes a weird topic to talk about but it affects a lot of women, it really does affect a lot of women.

Dr. Melinda Silva: It is very common.

Shally Zomorodi: Cream, eggs, asparagus, chocolate, you know what ever you need to do, you do it. Thanks for coming in Dr. Silva.

Dr. Melinda Silva: Yes, I am very happy to talk about it and it is something that is really a lot of women don’t want to talk about, it’s taboo, but it is intimacy is very important in relationships. So I think it is something that shouldn’t be ignored and please come in and have an evaluation so we can make sure

Shally Zomorodi: We have information on how to find her on Fox 5 San Diego.com You can visit her website. Thank you for coming in, really good information. Raul.
