Dr. Robert Rubin Discusses Andropause on Tampa's 970 WFLA

July 2009 | 970 WFLA Tampa

Dr. Robert Rubin of BodyLogicMD of Tampa and Naples discusses andropause, the male form of menopause. Unlike menopause, andropause has a more subtle onset and can start as early as when a man is in his 30s to as late as his 60s. It has overlapping symptoms to menopause, such as hot flashes, night sweats, and low libido. However, most of the symptoms are not as extreme as they are with women going through menopause. Dr. Rubin suggests that you should get your testosterone first tested when you are 30 so you can keep track of it as you age. Low levels of testosterone can lead to a high risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, and increased body fat.

Next, Dr. Robert Rubin of BodyLogicMD of Tampa and Naples discusses adrenal fatigue and what takes place during a patient’s first visit. Adrenal fatigue is when the adrenals, which create cortisol, do not produce it properly because a person is stressed on a daily basis. Sometimes exercising, a healthy diet, and a good night’s sleep can help, but in many cases it is necessary to have bioidentical hormone therapy. If you feel that you have a hormone imbalance, call the doctor’s office to set up a one hour visit. Before your appointment, you will have saliva and blood tests to check your hormone levels. During your visit you will discuss your goals and which therapies and lifestyle changes are right for you. Three months later you will come in for a follow-up consultation to check that your therapy is helping balance your hormone levels properly.

Lastly, Dr. Robert Rubin of BodyLogicMD of Tampa and Naples discusses menopause, andropause, and the reason why he decided to practice anti-aging medicine. The difference between men and women going through hormone imbalance is that while men’s testosterone levels start to fall 1-3% starting in their early 30s, women start to see symptoms of menopause sometimes 10 years before the actual onset of menopause. With both men and women, compounded medicines are given to them for treatment. Compounded medicines are hormones that look the same as what is in your body already, known as bioidentical hormones. After years of practicing geriatrics, Dr. Rubin switched his practice to anti-aging medicine. While a geriatrician he would see what was happening to people as they aged but also wanted to find ways to help them slow down the process. Anti-aging medicine was the perfect solution and he has dedicated his practice to it after having 300 hours of practice with the A4M.
